A businessman named Emmanuel Uwakwe was detained by the University of Calabar (UNICAL) for pretending to be six candidates taking the institution’s current aptitude test.

The suspect was detained on Wednesday, October 26, by security personnel from the institution after it was discovered that he had used the computer for a longer period of time than was normal.

According to reports, Emmanuel attempted to log in using the personal identification number of the seventh candidate he was impersonating when he was apprehended. He confessed to being headquartered in Abia state, having a business in Aria-ria market, and having been given a service fee of N50,000 to write the examinations for seven candidates when being questioned.

According to the institution’s chief security officer, Mr. Austin Bisong, none of the six applicants for whom Emmanuel took the exams will ever receive their results, and they also put their entrance to the university at jeopardy.

He also said that he would be turned over to an outside security agency for further investigation and any required action after it was determined whether he had received assistance from any institution staff or security officers.

The admission list for the 2022–2023 academic year has been made public by the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Port Harcourt.

The names of applicants who have been granted provisional admission to university degree programs for the 2022–2023 academic session are listed on the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education admission list, which has been successfully uploaded online.

Online admissions status checks for candidates who took part in the IAUE post-UTME screening process are now available.

How to Check IAUE Admission List

Provisional Admission into the First Degree Programs of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE) for the Academic Session 2022–2023 has been offered to the under-listed candidates.

Guidelines for Candidates Accepted into IAUE Programs
    NECESSARY ACTION:

To accept their admission, log in to the JAMB Central Admission Processing System (CAPS).

After accepting the admission, print their JAMB admission letter and JAMB result slip (coloured only), as they will need these during clearance and registration in the university.

On Monday, October 10, 2022, payment for acceptance fees will start to be processed.

As new information becomes available and the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) gives its approval for recommended candidates, the university administration will continue to update the list.

IAUE Important Information for Not Admitted Candidates

This is a notification that the JAMB CAPS has been activated for the admission process for candidates seeking admission to the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education for the 2022–2023 academic session. Candidates can now easily determine when they have been offered admission and can keep a close eye on their admissions status. In order to take the necessary action as soon as possible, we advise candidates to monitor their admission status on JAMB CAPS carefully.

Take the five crucial actions listed below to keep track of your admission using CAPS:

    1. VERIFY YOUR O’LEVEL UPLOAD:

    1. Log-in to their JAMB profile (https://www.jamb.org.ng/efacility_/)
    2. Click on ‘Check Admission Status,
    3. Click on ‘Access my CAPS’
    4. Click on ‘My O’level result to confirm if your O’level is uploaded. If not visit any nearby accredited JAMB CBT centre or Ignatius Ajuru University of Education ICT centre to upload your O’level result. Admission cannot be processed for candidates whose O’level status in CAPS indicates ‘Awaiting Result’.

    2. KNOW WHEN YOU HAVE BEEN OFFERED ADMISSION:

Click Admission Status to check the status of your admission after following step 1 above. You will be able to determine when JAMB has recommended or approved your admission thanks to this. You can accept your admission, print your admission letter, and follow any additional University clearance instructions if you are recommended for admission and the admission is approved by JAMB. Information regarding clearance will be made available on the university website and other university communication channels.

    3. APPROVAL OF TRANSFER OF PROGRAMME:

Following instructions 1-3 above, candidates are also expected to monitor their admission further by clicking the ‘Transfer Approval’ link to find out if they are recommended for transfer to another program. This is in accordance with the CAPS implementation policy, which states that the university will consider some students for transfer from the choice program to another program due to UTME and O’level combinations. This transfer consideration must be accepted or rejected by you. If you agree, the institution of your choice will be able to accept you into the new program. You will continue in your preferred Course/Program if you Reject. There won’t be any change to the program transfer.

    4. CANDIDATES WITH AWAITING RESULTS:

UTME candidates with O/level awaiting results should upload their results on the JAMB portal and university portal respectively. Direct-entry candidates, including JUPEB students, should also upload their A’level and O’level results to avoid disqualification. This is to enable the screening officers in the university to determine their qualifications for admission.

    5. HOW TO CHECK ADMISSION STATUS ON JAMB CAPS

    • Visit: http://www.jamb.org.ng/efacility/login with your registered email address and password to access your dashboard.
    • After you have logged in, click on check admission status.
    • Input your JAMB registration number and click on Access My CAPS.
    • You will be redirected to a new page, click on admission status
    • Confirm if you have been recommended, offered admission or not.

Please take note that if you are using a phone, you might not see the option to check your admission status on CAPS. Typically, welcome messages are all that users of phones see. Since you need to use desktop mode to view the entire page, the caps page only displays the welcome message. Because of this, using the Chrome browser on a phone is advised. All you have to do to get the full page to display is go to the Chrome option and select the request desktop site.

    1st stanza

The poem’s first stanza begins emphatically with “The grieved lands of Africa.” The poet persona here identifies the suffering and hardship that Africa and her people endured, affecting them with incalculable “woes” and sorrowful experiences. This manifests as “ancient and modern slave(ry).” The term “ancient slave” refers to the typical African kidnapped by European slavers and transported across the Atlantic to foreign lands to work as slaves on plantations in inhumane conditions. In this context, the “modern slave” refers to the African man who has been stripped of his rights and is governed by people from other countries in his own country. While the “ancient” wave is known as slavery, the “modern” wave is known as colonialism.

STANZA BY STANZA ANALYSIS OF THE POEM GRIEVED LANDS OF AFRICA

    2nd stanza

The poem’s second stanza is dedicated to colonialism and modern slavery. It also begins with “Africa’s Bereaved Lands.” This stanza demonstrates how African lands were colonized forcibly using “the wickedness of iron and fire.” The superimposition of foreign systems “crushed” the pre-existing African systems. While the poet is explicit in identifying “iron and fire” as a symbol of modernization, the periphrastic statement, “the wickedness of iron and fire,” refers to the superior firearms and ammunition used by Europeans in securing territories on the African continent, and with which several atrocities and brutalities were committed against the African populace.

    3rd stanza

This stanza follows the repetitive pattern of the previous two stanzas in that its first line is a repeat of the first lines of the previous two stanzas. The third stanza picks up where the second stanza leaves off. It reveals how European colonisers maintained colonial rule and how they reacted vehemently to any challenge, no matter how feeble, to their continued administration of African lands. They persecuted the challengers, imprisoned them, and sometimes killed them. While fighting for his country’s independence, the poet was imprisoned.

The poem continues, “the dreams soon undone in the jingling of jailer’s keys.” When the bearers had “the jingling jailer’s keys” as a barrier between them and the realization of their dreams, their dreams rotted away. Those on the outside were afraid of being imprisoned. There was no complete happiness, as evidenced by “stiffled laughter” (what kind of man is happy when he has become a slave in his own land?) and “voices of lamentation” that filled the air.

    4th stanza

The poem deviates from the first line repetition for the first time. Perhaps this represents a shift in the poem’s mood. In this and subsequent stanzas, “the grieved lands of Africa” is replaced with the third-person plural pronoun “they” and its variants. There is also the use of “us” in this stanza and “we” in other places. This implies that this poem contains two entities. The first is Africa’s bereaved lands. The second is a new generation of Africans who are aware of their heritage and the tragic experiences of their forefathers.

The poet’s persona implies that Africa’s bitter experiences will remain “alive in themselves” as long as they (“with us alive”) are alive; as long as there are people to tell them. These atrocities are indestructible and “in the perpetual alliance of everything that lives.” There is no way to tell African history without mentioning the atrocities committed against an entire race. As a result, the victims of these atrocities will be remembered for the rest of the time. The painful memories endure.

    5th stanza

Despite the many unimaginable things that had happened to Africa, “the corpses thrown in Atlantic/In putrid offering of incoherence/And death and in the clearness/Of rivers” “shout the sound of life.” Regardless, bereaved Africa cries out for life.

“Life” may refer to independence, freedom, and liberty in this context. It may also refer to or include the willingness to outlive the painful memories. Whatever “life” means the grieved lands of Africa are unafraid to exude it despite the gory details of their past.

    6th stanza
The poet persona creates a mental image of the kind of life that “the grieved lands of Africa” desire. One of the “harmonious sound of consciences/Contained in the honest blood of men”; lived in “men’s strong desire” and “sincerity/the pure and simple rightness of the stars’ existence.”

This is a life marked by a sense of what is right and wrong, sincerity, and African consciousness.

    7th stanza

The first line of the seventh stanza repeats the first line of the sixth: “They live.” This emphatic statement represents the determination to outlive an unpleasant past.

The poet persona confirms what we suspected in Stanza 4: the poet persona and his/her contemporaries are Africans: “We… imperishable particles of Africa’s grieved lands.”

After further consideration, one may conclude that Agostinho Neto’s The Grieved Lands of Africa is a comprehensive poem that chronicles the severe treatment received at the hands of people “of other seas,” noting the resulting grief.
